As more research is published, the link between your core and low back pain is astounding and definite. Physical therapist, Sahrmann, states, “ during most daily activities, the primary role of the abdominal muscles is to provide isometric support and limit the degree of rotation of the trunk…A large percentage of low back problems occur because the abdominal muscles are not maintaining tight control over the rotation between the pelvis and the spine at the L5- S1 level.” Basically, we need a stronger core to counteract rotational forces – our body turning. The reasoning behind this shift in core emphasis vs the abs is the ever increasing incidence of low back pain. However, also be prepared for some back pain down the road! Sure, if you just want to stand in the mirror and flex your six pack – go right ahead and crunch. Because of this, your core is so much more important than your abs. ![]() ![]() This area works together to keep you upright, to resist motion so you don’t fall over, to bend over AND stand back up again, to rotate, to walk/run efficiently, etc. The ENTIRE middle of your body is your core. Whereas, your CORE is a much bigger area! Your core covers the area from the rib cage down to your glutes on all sides of your body and incorporates your back muscles. Beyond that, they’re not so functional in daily tasks that require you to do more than bend over (because you have to stand back up again, right?). They’re the muscles that make up the front & side area of your belly (for lack of a better word). The long sought after six-pack is more about clean eating than doing a zillion crunches or sit ups. Your abs are just your abs. ![]() Now we know that the core functions more to help anti-rotation (twisting) of the trunk vs flexion of the trunk (crunching). The gold standard ab exercise used to be crunches, but then came the concept of the core. Someone asked why we don’t do any crunches or sit ups in class anymore. ![]() ![]() Additionally, to make this tournament more accessible to all players interested in participating, a USA Lacrosse membership will NOT be required for this event. Lantern Fruit similarly supply only a small amount of H2O, but the tree produces tons of fruit constantly and it never has to be replanted so it can be a convenient way to top off your food/water bars without getting involved in farming work. Although it doesn’t supply very much H2O, it can be nice to have around when you only need to replenish your food bar as it’s very easy to grow. The Chinese Potato can only be harvested by picking normally, not by using the Survival Knife. Alternatively, you can use your Survival Knife on a Marblemelon to produce 4 Marblemelon Seeds, which are not edible but only occupy 1 inventory slot each. Marblemelon can be harvested simply by picking it up, producing an edible fruit that occupies 4 inventory slots and supplies +12 Food and +14 H2O. The samples can also be planted – make sure to bring back at least one sample to plant in your Seabase. Harvesting samples from the Bulbo Tree requires the use of the Survival Knife, but the Bulbo Tree Samples that you receive replenish +8 Food and +10 H2O, making them an excellent low-effort food and water source. There are also some non-edible decorative plants on the island that can similarly be sampled and grown – feel free to grab samples of those as well if you have space leftover in your inventory. Now that you have growing containers for your plants, collect at least one sample from each of these edible plants before leaving the island. This is technically faster than the chip inside the 10th-gen iPad model and, again, more than powerful enough for most tasks, though it’s a step behind the laptop-grade M1 or M2 chip. The mini runs on Apple’s A15 Bionic SoC, the same as the one in 2021’s iPhone 13 phones. It doesn’t have a “ Smart Connector” to hook up Apple-made keyboards, but it does support the second-gen Apple Pencil. Its display is technically sharper, but otherwise gives you the same max brightness, lamination, anti-reflective coating and wide color gamut. Its design follows closely after that of the iPad Air: squared-off edges, thin bezels, no Home button, a Touch ID sensor in the power button, stereo speakers, solid cameras and a USB-C port. We gave the iPad mini a review score of 89 in 2021. It’s easily the shortest (7.69x5.3x0.25 inches) and lightest (0.65 pounds for the WiFi model) of every current iPad, with an 8.3-inch display that’s more comfortable to operate with one hand. The iPad mini is exactly what it sounds like: the small iPad. The 9th-gen iPad is the most affordable model in Apple’s lineup, and those savings go a long way toward papering over its issues. Those are less convenient than the company’s newer options, but they’re at least there. In terms of first-party accessories, the tablet supports Apple's Smart Keyboard and first-gen Pencil stylus. It won’t be as fluid or futureproof as the M1, but it’s plenty quick for casual tasks. The 9th-gen iPad runs on Apple’s A13 Bionic, which is the same SoC used in 2019’s iPhone 11 series. Its speakers don’t sound as nice, either, but it’s the only iPad to still have a headphone jack, and its 12MP front camera is fine (though, it’s not landscape-oriented as on the 10th-gen iPad). There’s a Home button located on the bottom bezel that also houses a Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and the device charges via Lightning port rather than USB-C. Like the 10th-gen iPad, that screen isn't laminated and more susceptible to glare, though it’s just as sharp. This is the only “current” iPad to follow Apple’s older design language: It’s just a tiny bit thicker and heavier than the 10th-gen iPad and iPad Air, but its wider bezels mean there’s only enough room for a 10.2-inch display. We gave the 9th-gen iPad model a review score of 86 in 2021. While its hardware is an obvious step down from the models above, it’s still more than capable for the essentials. Starting at $329 for a 64GB model - and regularly available for less than $300 - it’s by far the most wallet-friendly way into iPadOS. If you can’t afford the Air, or if you just don’t use your tablet heavily enough to warrant spending that much, it’s perfectly safe to get the 9th-gen iPad instead. Still, while it’s not cheap, the iPad Air is Apple’s best blend of price and performance for most. (The display on the 2021 iPad Pro is better, too.) The new 10.9-inch iPad isn’t bad, either, but with its non-laminated display and lacking accessory support, it’s a harder sell unless you see it on deep discount. If you need more than the Air’s default 64GB of storage, you might as well step up to the 11-inch iPad Pro, which starts at 128GB and packs a better 120 Hz display and M2 chip for not much more than a higher-capacity Air. The middle of Apple’s iPad lineup is a bit congested. These add a good bit of cost to the bottom line, but for digital artists or frequent typers, they’re there. The iPad Air is also compatible with Apple’s best accessories, including the second-generation Pencil stylus and the ( excellent) Magic Keyboard, just like the 11-inch iPad Pro. This isn’t Apple’s newest SoC, but it’s still more than powerful enough for virtually any task you can throw at it, and an increasing number of iPadOS features are exclusive to M-series chips. It comes with a USB-C port, similar to what you’d find on a MacBook and many other non-iPhone devices, and while it’s not a Thunderbolt connection as on the iPad Pro, simply being able to charge the Air with the same cable you use with your other gadgets is a plus.Īpple refreshed the Air in 2022 with its M1 system-on-a-chip, which is the same silicon found in the entry-level MacBook Air. We gave it a score of 90 in our review of the most recent edition: It has the same elegant and comfortable design language as the iPad Pro while costing less, with a bright, sharp and accurate 10.9-inch display surrounded by thin bezels and flat edges. Of the six iPad models currently on sale, the iPad Air is the closest to being universally appealing. ![]() ![]() It’s a very welcome antidote to the rollercoaster intro sequences we tend to experience in other, more notable action RPGs. This all happens at the pace of the player and occurs mostly through conversation, and the sheer variety of different routes you can take to get to the main crux of the game’s narrative is dizzyingly impressive.Īt points, this long winding introduction to the game feels aimless, and at others it feels emergent and bravura – it peaks and slumps in the way an adventure like this would, were it to take place in the real world. The game spent ample time allowing me to get to know ordinary people, do odd-jobs for them, soak in the mood and circumstance of their lives, and through that process come to my own natural conclusions regarding the motives and ideals of each opposing group. At least initially, this slow and methodical burn had me hooked. Risen is no different in this case, however the way in which the game slowly builds out the identity of these factions – along with the world they inhabit – is truly refreshing. ![]() A common trope of the modern action RPG is that you as a player will find yourself being pulled between two different warring factions, both vying for power and influence. Perhaps the heaviest dose of complimentary gush I can level at Risen is that its opening three hours are something very unique. Once your shaven-headed, late 00s wonder of a main character collects himself amidst the stormy shores of Faranga, the game’s strongest act begins in earnest. Textures are notably mushy, landscapes tend to devolve into soup as you look off into the horizon, and environmental weather effects are thoroughly unremarkable. ![]() Visually, Faranga adopts a Mediterranean aesthetic which – while nice looking on the odd occasion – is more likely to strike you as quite rough around the edges in 2023. This island will accommodate your adventures across the game’s 30-40 hour lifespan, as you figure out why mysterious temples have emerged from the ground spewing all manner of eldritch beasties out into the general populace. Following a particularly nasty storm, you’re thrown overboard and you subsequently wash up on the shores of Faranga, the game’s open-world, fantasy island setting. Risen kicks off with a gloriously dated looking CGI cutscene, where you witness your character (The Nameless Hero) stowing away on a small sea-vessel. ![]() ![]() If this is a computer operated transmission, you must ensure the system has been cleared and ready to accept the new transmission, your local auto parts store, auto repair or dealership can assist with this. Tragic choices were made under extreme conditions. Faced with Hitler’s onslaught, one could not always afford to pick one’s allies. We may regard Stalinism with horror, and especially with the benefit of hindsight. If we today live in a democratic and peaceful Europe, we owe a “debt towards those who fought to build it” even if that leaves us with an uneasy complicity with Soviet communism. If all violent political struggles involve tragedy, some deserve more than distanced moral evaluation. Human rights and Holocaust consciousness, not politically compromised anti-fascism, are the new civic religion.Īgainst these apostles of anti-totalitarianism, Traverso sets himself to reinstating the old anti-fascist verities. Their anglophone counterparts are the new historians of the second world war, scholars such as Norman Davies and Timothy Snyder, who see in that conflict little more than a clash of dictatorships that made victims or perpetrators out of everybody who inhabited the “bloodlands”. From the 1970s a bevy of historians and intellectuals, many of them, such as François Furet, former communists, began to re-evaluate the entire epoch, criticising and historicising both fascism and anti-fascism and tracing their bloody struggle all the way back to the French revolution, which was recast as the origin of all modern ideological conflict. In Greece its reverberations could still be felt 70 years later in 2015 as Syriza vainly summoned the heroic memory of the partisans against the might of the eurozone.īut these days in France and Italy, anti-fascism has fallen on hard times. Cloaked in the mythology of the resistance and Popular Front anti-fascism, as well as the hidden histories of collaboration, it left a deep imprint on postwar political culture. He argues that a state of more or less open civil strife extended around the Mediterranean from the 1930s to the 1940s – from Greece and Yugoslavia to Italy, France and Spain. Traverso provides an unfamiliar perspective on these decades, one of European “civil war”. Politics became a matter of life and death. ![]() War and civil war merged, as partisans and their pursuers took hostages and made reprisals, German flamethrowers blasted the hillside and American bombers rained down fire. To break open our complacency, in his brilliant opening chapter Traverso plunges us into the blood-soaked history of his home region of Piedmont, where for two terrible years between 19 the Wehrmacht and their fascist henchmen fought a final stand against insurgent partisans and the overwhelming might of the allied armies. How can we understand the “age of extremes” (1914 to 1945) from a present – our present day in the west – that is in general terms allergic to “ideology” and convinced that “there is no alternative”? What happens when an anodyne and self-satisfied liberalism projects its values back into an earlier era of intense political struggle?
